The Eden Project
The world famous Eden Project is located approximately 10 miles North West of Mevagissey. The project is built in an old china clay pit and it's most recognisable feature are the two biomes, but what does it do?
What is the Eden Project?
Simply put, The Eden Project refer to themselves as a "global garden". The site is home to species of plants from all over the world. The two biomes recreate the temperatures that the plants come from; one is tropical and one emulates a Mediterranean environment.
The project's aim is to work together with organisations around the world to work towards conservation, responsible land use and a sustainable future for the planet. This is one of the main reasons that the old clay pit was chosen for the project. It provided the perfect opportunity to portray their overall intention while regenerating the site.
Since its opening in 2000 the project has grown considerably, with The Core being opened in 2005 to provide and education facility. There is also an exhibition centre in the core and the building plays homage to The Plant Engine which powers the whole site.
The Eden Project was used in filming for the James Bond film Die Another Day and also played host to the Africa Calling concert during Live 8 in 2005. Since 2005 it has played host to several other concerts, including Muse and The Kaiser Chiefs.
